Nokia, Intel to Develop 3D Applications

Nokia and Intel today said they are teaming up to create 3D applications for smartphones running their MeeGo software, as the companies hope to leverage holograms to bolster sales of their products.
The tech companies, which formed a joint venture to support MeeGo, a mobile operating system, said they plan on working on the 3D concept at a new Intel Lab at the University of Oulu in Finland."We could look into technologies that allow displaying a 3D hologram of the person you are talking to on the phone, a capability only found in science fiction movies today," said Martin Curley, director of Intel Labs. "Consumers will feel more involved and engaged with their mobile experience than with current methods." Company executives didn't give concrete examples of projects, but instead highlighted broad possibilities, such as creating social networks within games for mobile devices. "It's premature to go through all the scenarios we are starting to research," Curley said. Nokia and Intel are trying to catch up after largely missing the shift from handsets to smartphones. The companies hope that the popularity of 3D will give them a strategic advantage against rivals such as Apple's iPhone and ARM Holdings, which makes most of the processors in mobile devices. "The MeeGo community is active, vibrant," said Curley added. Intel said 24 scientists will begin work at the university over the next three years to create the 3D apps.
