Customers are downloading an increasing number of mobile phone apps to their devices, said market research firm Nielsen.
According to a survey conducted of more than 4,000 smartphone users, the average number of apps customers have on their phones has increased to 27 in August, up from 22 last December.Apple iPhone owners top the list, with an average of 40 apps on their handsets. But Android and BlackBerry owners' app usage has also rose to 25 apps and 14 apps, respectively -- an increase from 22 apps and 10 apps last December. Nielsen also surveyed what kind of apps were being downloaded. The company found that games are still the most popular app category of mobile downloads. But weather, maps/navigation and social networking apps are emerging as major categories as well. Facebook is the most popular individual app for iPhone, Android, BlackBerry and Windows Mobile phones, according to Nielsen. Among downloads for non-smartphone devices, Apple's iPod Touch leads the way. Sony's PlayStation Portable game device, e-readers, iPads and Microsoft's Zune portable media player were also mentioned by consumers as gadgets they used to download apps. The Nielsen survey shows increased mobile app downloading by users across the board, indicating that the market for apps is only getting larger.
